Article by yttrium oxide (y2o3), commonly known as yttria, is an air-stable white solid substance. It is the most important yttrium compound and it is widely used to make YVO4 europium phosphors, which give the red color in TV picture tubes and also as a host material for rare earth laser dopants in yttrium aluminium garnet lasers. It is also an excellent microwave filter. The compound is toxic by intraperitoneal and skin routes. It may cause fibrogenic lung disease in workers exposed to high levels.
