A white to yellowish-white, amorphous powder, practically insoluble in water and glycerol, soluble in concentrated acid; it loses one mole of H2O when heated at 100 deg C forming bismuth metahydroxide, a yellow compound. It is used in the manufacture of bismuth salts, as an absorbent for rutin and quercetin, and to separate plutonium from irradiated uranium. It is also used as a catalyst for the removal of nitrate and other anions from water, as an ingredient in carbon dioxide gas sensor, as a catalyst for cathodic electrophoretic paints, and as a raw material for making artificial teeth. The preparation method is simple, economical, and low in impurity content. The specific conductivity of the product is less than 300 m s/cm. The mean particle size is between 0.01 10 m m.
